Success stories
Clindamycin Crisis
A company in the United States had been marketing a highly profitable product for many years. With little warning, supplies of the main active ingredient, clindamycin, were abruptly cut off due to the unexpected closure of its sole source. As it happened, Baralex was also affected, since we were supplying clindamycin to our own clients from the same company.
Within a short time, Baralex had identified a potential new source, convinced them to upgrade their production facilities by building a dedicated plant, and secured long-term contracts to ensure the viability of the new operation. Thanks to Baralex, the clindamycin crisis was over.
Today, Baralex is a major supplier of clindamycin phosphate to American pharmaceutical companies.
Methadone Mixer
Though several companies produce methadone used primarily to wean addicts off heroin the usual material is a fine powder, which is difficult to mix with liquids and thus, quite unappealing to patients. When a customer approached Baralex in search of a more soluble methadone formulation, we located a suitable manufacturer to develop a fine crystalline version of the drug at our request. This dosage form was more soluble and readily accepted by patients.
Today, Baralex is the dominant supplier of methadone in Canada.
Cophylac is back
Cophylac, a specialty product for control of intractable cough, was discontinued in 2000. A Canadian firm saw an opportunity for this mature brand, which continues to enjoy a small but established franchise in Canada. Baralex located a supplier to custom manufacture the active ingredient; the normethadone, proceeded with development of the formulation, obtained all necessary regulatory approvals, and arranged for manufacturing of the finished product. Total time from start to finish? Less than two years.
Cophylac illustrates our capabilities in providing turnkey products.
Probiostat Vaginal:
Baralex, through its indepth knowledge of the pharmaceutical market identified an opportunity to develop a turn key product for vaginal infections. With a product concept in mind, Baralex arranged a commercial deal with a Canadian pharmaceutical company. Baralex was responsible for managing all aspects of the product development: sourcing of the raw materials, development of the packaging, production planning andregistration/regulatory filing.
Within a one year timeframe, the product, Probiostat Vaginal was ready for the commercial sale.
